		<description>Hussain,

That appears to be the primary mechanism:

		<description>Happy New Year, Iggy! :)

That&#039;s an interesting find! Thank you for bringing to my/our attention.

I found this portion of the study abstract interesting too:

&quot;Although insulin and metformin display opposing effects on Abeta generation, in combined use, metformin enhances insulin&#039;s effect in reducing Abeta levels.&quot;

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2656178/?tool=pubmed

I think this is all based primarily on one study - though it seems to be a pretty intriguing one. I&#039;ll keep an eye out to see if other research supports or refutes this finding.

Be well!

		<description>There is another red flag concerning metformin. There is some evidence that that it increases amyloid plaque associated with Alzheimer&#039;s Disease....however some scientists question if amyloid plaque is a cause of AD.

I&#039;ve taken metformin for years and continue to do so.

		<description>Sai,

I couldn&#039;t agree more with your points. :) Supplementing with folic acid, B6 and B12 is probably a wise move when using Metformin. Another option might be to take a higher potency multivitamin or a B-complex supplement. By doing so, it virtually eliminates the risk of deficiency and harmful elevations in homocysteine. Blood tests can confirm both of these assertions.

I hope you have a wonderful day too, Sai! :)

Be well!

		<description>Good Day JP!

   Thanks much for a very useful article. While Metformin is a very good drug it does deplete the B12 levels (partucularly vegetarians) so one should be on the look out for that. Another interesting point is, while the maximum dosage allowed in the US is 2500 mg, it is only 1700 mg in India and the UK. My personal point is if someone has elevated blood sugar, then Metformin should be the first line of treatment along with the other changes in Diet and lifestyle that would reverse their condition. But more often some anti-diabetic medications are prescribed as i have seen in so many instances. Even in my own case there was reduction in ldl and trigyclerides when put on metformin (back to normal). You concluding statement about Dr. Bernie Siegel was very true and important too. Have a pleasant day :-)

Best Regards
