Maris,

Please don't panic. The information I provide on this site is meant to be empowering not frightening. Any positive step you take, based on what you learn here and elsewhere, will place you in better position to stay healthy. That's all. Just keep on trying to make practical improvements in your daily life and I think you'll end up all the better for it. :)

Be well!

As I was reading your post, I had to muster every ounce of control in my mind to keep myself from panicking: I am at risk. Frequent overdrives coupled with little sleep most days of the week makes me a likely, or should I say, obvious candidate for bone loss. With insomnia, I guess I already am one though I no longer see it that way since it has comfortably fitted into my frantic, overworked way of life. Maybe it's high time I put more serious consideration in these treatment approaches you mentioned here.

Good day, Nina! :)

I'll tell you the first things that came to mind:

Even if your husband comes home late and is very tired, I still think it helps to take a refreshing shower. In my experience, this can cool you off and also helps you transition from a work mindset to a more relaxed state of mind.

I'm assuming that your husband is worn out by the time he gets home. Therefore I think more passive, stress relieving strategies may work better than ones that require effort. To that end, I would consider aromatherapy. Simply putting a few drops of relaxing essential oil(s) on a handkerchief or tissue and having him inhale it can help calm him and ease his mind. Lavender and orange (or bergamot) essential oils would be good options, IMO. Please refer to an upcoming column on aromatherapy to be posted later this week.

Finally, I'm a big massage fan. It's a great way to provide instantaneous tension relief. Everyone tends to hold tension in different spots of their body - the neck, shoulders, etc. For me it's my scalp. A good head/scalp massage helps me drift off to sleep. Please note that the massage is best provided when he's ready to sleep - in bed, lights out, etc. No distractions.

I hope one or more of these options will help you both sleep better!

Be well!

Thanks, Anne!

I agree. Who knows, one day doctors may prescribe meditation instead of bisphosphonates. It's a long shot but a fellow can dream, can't he? :)
