Almond Spiced Latte Recipe
May 11, 2010 Written by JPHello. I’m the Healthy Fellow and I’m addicted to coffee. Well, maybe “addicted” is overstating it a bit, but apart from water, it’s the beverage that I consume the most in my daily life. I genuinely enjoy the taste of most high quality coffees and I actually consider it to be a health promoting beverage on the whole. But just like any other favorite drink or food, it can become rather monotonous if I always drink it exactly the same way. Boring! Read more »

Healthy Monday Tip
May 10, 2010 Written by JPI’m happy to announce that I’ve been asked to participate in a community outreach effort entitled Healthy Monday. In this program, various individuals, news organizations and web sites are working in association with Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Newhouse School at Syracuse University to help spread the word about “behaviors and actions that will end preventable disease”. I love this concept and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

Belly Fat, Depression and Multiple Sclerosis Questions
May 7, 2010 Written by JPThis past week I wrote a column featuring questions sent in by regular readers of this site. That blog inspired a whole new series of questions from other interested parties. My answers to today’s inquiries will touch upon several topics including the perplexing issue of middle-aged stomach fat, a natural intervention for multiple sclerosis and a complementary therapy that may help depressed patients avoid frequent relapses. Pesticide Shopping Guide
May 6, 2010 Written by JPWe’re all told to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables in order to support good health. But has your doctor or nutritionist ever explained which produce items are most likely to contain higher levels of pesticides? Probably not. This is a shame because if you’re eating large amounts of conventionally grown fruits and veggies, you’re almost certainly taking in a fair amount of pesticide residue right along with the valuable antioxidants, fiber and nutrients inherently present in these foods. This may seem like a discouraging state of affairs. However, being aware of this reality is a good starting point to improve upon the quality of what you eat and feed your family. Read more »

Natural Health Questions and Answers
May 5, 2010 Written by JPAnswering questions about natural health topics is one of my favorite parts of this job. It’s rewarding whether or not I have a good response to the inquiry being posed. If I already know the answer, it makes me happy to share it with others. On the other hand, if I’m stumped by a question, it gives me an incentive to do a little digging and expand my own knowledge base. Either way, it’s a winning proposition for all involved. Read more »

Pepperoni Pizza Crisps Recipe
May 4, 2010 Written by JPI’m a big fan of some of the cooking shows that have recently been popularized on cable and satellite television. I find it interesting to see how notable chefs reinvent classic recipes in order to set themselves apart from the culinary pack. One way they do so is by “deconstructing” a meal. This essentially entails shuffling around the typical ingredients contained in a popular or classic dish and presenting them in a new and interesting way. That’s what I’ve tried to do with this recipe that would be a delicious, but healthful appetizer or hors d’oeuvres. Read more »

Healthy Heart Tips
May 3, 2010 Written by JPAccording to the American Heart Association’s Statistics Committee, heart disease will cost the United States approximately $316 billion dollars in health care spending this year alone. That isn’t a figure that any nation would be proud of. However it is a reality and it needs to be acknowledged. What’s also true is that much of the money spent addressing this health crisis focuses on the role of pharmaceutical and surgical interventions. Today I’m going to take a critical look at several nutritional options that may mitigate the general trend that cardiovascular disease is taking in the US and well beyond its borders. (1) Read more »
